Food Memory Box

I invite you to dive into your memories, recipes and stories — of the farmers’ market, bakeries, restaurants, and any meal you’ve ever had or made — because I know that food carries a strong emotional current.

Food takes us back in time as it brings us into the moment. The scents of cooking, the tastes and textures of food, the care we put into feeding ourselves and each other, our hungers, and deprivations — these are potent feelings. In my own writing, I tap into the power of food, and I want you to join me.

I have a hunch that exploring food memories will help us get to know ourselves – as individuals and families, and as a community. Here is a form with prompts to get your writing. If you’d like to just take the prompts and put them in a journal, please do. My idea is to get you to engage with your food memories.

I’m curious about what food conveys and holds, and how that relates to where you are. I’ll be discussing this project – and the stories you entrust to me – in a podcast with artist Justin Baker. If you’d like to record your writing for that, please leave me your name and email.

Please join me on Saturday September 18th at the Troy Public Library at 2 p.m. for a talk about bread.

I’m grateful to the Troy Farmers’ Market for hosting me! And big thanks to the Placid Baker for helping me with recipes & cookies.

This project is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrants Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by The Arts Center of the Capital Region.
